A good webcomic makes the readers want to come back after each update. Have a clear premise and characters with goals, conflict, and personality that provide emotional investment. Every episode should provide a satisfying moment but raise an intriguing question. The balance of progress and suspense gives the reader the incentive to read the next book.
It’s also important to the visual consistency. Unique character designs, easy-to-read panels, character expressions and pacing make it easy for readers to follow the story on any screen. Create believable backgrounds and details but don’t have too much that slows down the action.
Consistent schedules build audience trust. If it is weekly or bi-monthly, as long as it is the same and regularity is more important than speed. Use thoughtful comments, polls, or sketches behind the scenes to engage readers, but do not allow the story to stray. Most of all, honor the audience’s time: avoid wasting it with empty beginnings and endings, use humor or tenderness to break up the tension, and give long-term readers some payoff for character development. If a webcomic is interesting, every update is complete and necessary.
